REGISTERING CANADIAN BORDER COLLIES

The first thing to understand about registering a Canadian Border Collie is that it must be purebred.  In Canada a purebred Border Collie must be registered with the Canadian Border Collie Association (CBCA).  The CBCA is the only association recognized by the Canadian Livestock and pedigree act.  There are several other organizations that Canadian Border Collies can also be registered with and we will attempt to walk you through the process as best we can below!

If you go to the AKC or CKC websites you will not find much helpful information on registering Canadian Border Collies.  This is why we have created this helpful link.  If you have any further questions regarding registering your Border Collie please contact the organizations directly.

These explanations are ONLY accurate for purebred Canadian Border Collies born in Canada and living in Canada.

Canadian Border Collie Association (CBCA)

The CBCA has split their registry into an "A" and "B" grouping

Dogs are registered in the "A" registry if all of their ancestors were registered with registries that concentrated on herding
Dogs are registered in the "B" registry if any of their ancestors were from registries that encouraged conformation showing (eg. AKC and most of the other kennel clubs)

Puppies

Canadian Border Collie puppies can be registered with the CBCA if both of their parents are registered with the CBCA. Puppies will be registered in the "A" registry if both of their parents are from the "A" registry. Puppies will be registered in the "B" registry if either of their parents are registered in the "B" registry.

Adult Dogs
Adult dogs can be registered with the CBCA if they are registered with an organization that the CBCA recognizes.  Please go directly to there website for more information on this process.

Registering Canadian Border Collies with
The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC)

The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) does not register Border Collies.  However, Canadian purebred Border collies registered with the Canadian Border Collie Association (CBCA) can compete in CKC events as a "listed breed".  To compete in these events you need to apply for a Miscellaneous Certification Number

Registering Canadian Border Collies with
The American Kennel Club (AKC)

The American Kennel Club (AKC) will also register purebred Canadian Border Collies.

For Adult Dogs
To be registered by the AKC you must do the ALL of the following:
  • Have registration papers from the Canadian Border Collie Association
  • send 2 standing pictures of your dog one from the side and one from the front
  • apply for an Open Dog Registry
  • apply for a Foreign Dog Registry
  • if you are planning to breed your dog you should also send in a DNA sample as it will save you time when you register your first litter
To register a litter with AKC

If both parents are registered with AKC then you will have to fill out and submit a litter application you will not be able to register your litter on-line (at least not at this time July 2009) because the on line forms will not accept a Canadian postal code and you can not continue without it!

If either parent of the puppies was regsitered with the AKC on or after March 1 2006 then you will also have to submit a DNA sample before registering the litter (see link above).

Registering an adult dog that has an AKC litter registration

If your puppy has a litter application then it must be individually registered with the AKC.  This is relatively easy and you should have been provided with the proper forms from your breeder or the breeder may register your puppy for you.  Please contact your breeder or the AKC for more information.

AMERICAN BORDER COLLIE ASSOCIATION
You can register a Canadian Border collie that is already registered in the CBCA  "A" registry.  If your dog is registered in the CBCA "B" registry you will not be able to register with the ABCA as they require that no ancestor be registered with AKC or any other registry that has conformation.

You can not register a dog that only has AKC registration.
